Located just a few miles south of Washington, D.C., Alexandria is a city that essentially acts as its own county, as cities throughout Virginia have no larger county affiliation (and are considered county-equivalents for census purposes). The city was founded in 1749, and many historical buildings from that era can be found throughout Old Town Alexandria, which was established in 1946 as the third-oldest historic district in the United States. If you're looking for a reprieve from the crowded streets of Alexandria, take a trip over to the George Washington Masonic National Memorial. Not to be confused with a similar memorial in D.C., this 333-foot-tall building sits in a hilltop park and contains a colossal bronze head of America's first president.
