THE FALL THAT BROKE CHEVY CHASE WAS NOT THE ONE HE DID ON STAGE |
Chevy Chase was born Cornelius Crane Chase, a prep school kid from New York who taught himself to be funny and turned it into the biggest job in television. In 1975, he became one of the founding cast members of Saturday Night Live and the first person in history to say “Live from New York, it’s Saturday night.” |
He left after one season, certain television was beneath him. At his peak he was earning $7 million a film and had every reason to believe he was right. |
But the fall that ended him had nothing to do with fame. |
During a sketch on Saturday Night Live, Chase did a pratfall that went wrong and injured his back. The chronic pain that followed led to a painkiller addiction that quietly wrecked him for years. |
Then, on the set of Modern Problems in 1980, faulty landing lights sent electric current through his body and nearly killed him. |
His marriage fell apart the same year. The man who had been America’s funniest person told people he had never felt lower in his life. |
His marriage fell apart the same year. By the mid-1980s, he was trying to piece himself back together and called Lorne Michaels about coming back to host SNL. |
But what Chase did in that sketch pitch got him banned from the show for life. |

THE CONTESTANT PAULA ABDUL REJECTED ON LIVE TELEVISION, DIED OUTSIDE HER HOME |
Paula Abdul made the Los Angeles Lakers cheerleading squad from a field of 700 hopefuls and was promoted to head choreographer within a year. |
She went on to choreograph Janet Jackson’s music videos and The Jacksons’ Victory tour, then released a debut album, Forever Your Girl, that spent 10 weeks at number one and set the record for the most Billboard Hot 100 chart-toppers from a single record. |
By the early 2000s, she was one of three judges on American Idol, the most-watched show in America. A yes or a no from the judges’ table was the difference between a contestant’s dream surviving or ending on live television in front of millions. |
Paula Goodspeed had been following Abdul since she was a teenager, collecting her autographs and studying her choreography. |
By the time she walked into the American Idol audition room in 2006, she had spent years building her entire world around the woman now sitting at the judges’ table. |
But Abdul didn’t make it easy. She was harsh, and the rejection aired in front of millions. But the public humiliation didn’t break the obsession…it deepened it. |
In November 2008, a neighbor noticed a car parked outside Abdul’s Los Angeles home and called police. Inside was Paula Goodspeed. She had died by suicide. |
But what investigators found when they looked into Paula Goodspeed’s history with Abdul is where this story gets dark. |
