Hey there, Emily and Brad here!

We hope you're having an amazing day! 🌟 We're excited to talk about something fascinating: how fasting can benefit your brain health.

You might be wondering, "How can skipping meals be good for my brain?"

Well, let's dive in!

What is Fasting?

Fasting involves voluntarily not eating for a set period. It's not about starving yourself; it's about giving your body and brain a break.

How Does Fasting Help the Brain?

When you fast, your body goes through several beneficial changes:

  • Boosts Brain Function: Fasting increases the production of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a protein that supports the survival of existing neurons and encourages the growth of new neurons.

  • Reduces Inflammation: By giving your digestive system a rest, fasting can reduce inflammation, which is linked to many brain disorders.

  • Improves Memory: Studies suggest that fasting can enhance memory and cognitive function. It's like giving your brain a refreshing reboot!

How to Start Fasting:

1. Intermittent Fasting (IF):

  • 16/8 Method: Fast for 16 hours and eat during an 8-hour window. For example, eat between 12 PM and 8 PM, and fast from 8 PM to 12 PM the next day.

  • 5:2 Method: Eat normally for 5 days of the week, and restrict calories to 500-600 on the other 2 days.

2. Alternate-Day Fasting: Eat normally one day and either fast or eat a very reduced amount (around 500 calories) the next day.

3. Extended Fasting: Fast for 24 hours once or twice a week. This can be from dinner one day to dinner the next day.

Here are some tips for safe fasting:

  • Start Slow: Begin with short fasting periods and gradually increase them as your body adapts.

  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water. Herbal teas and black coffee are also good options.

  • Listen to Your Body: If you feel dizzy or overly fatigued, it's okay to break your fast.

Fact! Fish, especially fatty fish like salmon, is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which are essential for brain health. Omega-3s can improve cognitive function and protect against age-related decline.
