While yesterday's address regarding the ongoing war in Israel had a few bright points, what President Joe Biden's remarks did more than anything was to draw global attention to the inescapable reality of his evident deterioration and inability to handle the immense workload and psychological demands of the presidency. At several points during his speech before prominent Jewish figures, his speech was slurred, he seemed visibly exhausted. As RNC Research pointed out he became lost while reading the pre-written remarks. He spoke incoherently at times saying things like: "And we mourn the act, enact, you and so many leaders have across the country showing us..." -or- "I'll never forget. Well, I won't go into that. Anyway..." At one point during the speech when he discussed bringing his grandchildren to the former Nazi concentration camp at Dachau he jarringly raised his voice and shouted in anger. While perhaps this was intended to be a powerful emotional moment showing strength and righteous rage, it landed far afield. Instead, it read to many as the indistinct tantrum of an elderly man no longer in control of his emotional state, a heartbreaking sight familiar to those of us who've cared for our parents and grandparents in their twilight. While rhetorically, the speech as written was well done, the delivery here faltered badly. A moment to voice the outrage, anger, and resolve of the American people with strength and grim determination instead showed weakness. And weakness is very, very dangerous in days like these. It's an unacceptable conceit that we can no longer afford. - Trending Politics Email Newsletter Editor, Matt Holloway |
