As Memorial Day approaches, we are reminded of the tremendous courage and sacrifice displayed by our veterans throughout history. This day holds a special meaning for us at Mood as a time of remembrance and an opportunity to reflect on the incredible individuals who have shaped our lives and nation. Today, I want to share a deeply personal story that embodies the spirit of this holiday.
My grandfather Bernie, a true American hero, served in World War II and played an instrumental role in the development of the Manhattan Project. He was an immigrant from Belarus who embraced the United States of America with unwavering patriotism. He saw a beacon of hope and opportunity in this country, and he felt called to serve his adopted homeland with all his heart.
During his time-fighting in North Africa, my grandfather's life hung in the balance after his jeep struck a landmine. At that moment, something extraordinary occurred as he teetered on the edge of life and death. He experienced a profound encounter—a voice from beyond urging him to leave the light, as it was not his time yet. It was a message filled with love and wisdom, delivered by his mother-in-law. This experience left an indelible mark on his soul.
Exactly 15 years later, to the day my father was born—a miracle that spoke of resilience and purpose passed down through generations. This coincidence underscores the power of destiny, the interconnectedness of our lives, and the legacy of those who have served our country.
At Mood, we are honored to employ many extraordinary veterans who have dedicated themselves to protecting our freedoms. Their contributions, both in and out of uniform, have enriched our company and made it a better place. Their unwavering commitment, discipline, and passion inspire us daily, and we are grateful for their service.
Now, let me share a heartwarming memory of Bernie — a loving man with a spark in his beautiful blue eyes. I remember the comforting scent of his pipe, a fragrance that still lingers in my memories. As a kid, I used to proclaim, "It's time for the pipe to be smoked!" and he'd gaze lovingly and nod, "Yes, Davey, it is indeed," sparking up as a plume of smoke curled around the edges of his bucket hat.
He embodied the American dream as an immigrant, demonstrating a deep love for America. His patriotism was woven into the fabric of his being, and this profound sense of duty led him to spend many of his years in military service.
As we reflect together this Memorial Day, let us honor the memory of those who gave everything for our freedom. Please take a moment to remember the heroes who never made it home, the families who must endure their absence, and the veterans who carry the weight of their sacrifice. In their memory, let us strive to be a united, compassionate community that values the liberty and opportunities they fought valiantly to protect.
This Memorial Day, let us come together to pay our respects, express gratitude, and foster a sense of unity and purpose. Our veterans and their sacrifices deserve nothing less.
With heartfelt gratitude,
David Charles
